Salary of a DART Driver

DART stands for the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority -- not to be confused with Dallas Area Rapid Transit, which uses the same acronym. The transit authority serves Iowa’s capital city and its metropolitan area. DART offers bus service for 19 cities, including local and express routes, as well as shuttle and on-call service. The salary of a DART driver depends on the type of route and service provided and whether the driver works full- or part-time.


DART was established in 2006, replacing the Des Moines Metropolitan Transit Authority. Local property taxes and fare revenue fund DART, which is managed by a nine-member board of commissioners.


Applicants for DART bus driving positions must be a minimum of 21 years old and possess an excellent driving record over the past five years. Drivers must have a valid Iowa driver’s license and be able to obtain a Class B CDL license from the state. Paratransit drivers are not required to obtain a CDL. A high school diploma or GED is required; the candidate must be able to understand fare structures and schedules, and pass a pre-employment screening.

Fixed Route Salary

DART drivers earn set hourly wages, based on whether the driver is hired to work part-time or full-time. As of this publication, part-time drivers earned $13.71 to $15.30 per hour. Full-time drivers earn a maximum of $19.52 per hour, which is $40,738 per year based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s 2,087-hour divisor.

Paratransit Salary

DART paratransit drivers earn $13.23 to $15.05 per hour for part-time work. Full-time paratransit drivers are paid $15.39 per hour, which is $32,119 per year based on the OPM formula.


DART drivers receive a variety of benefits: A uniform allowance, retirement plan and an on-site wellness center are some of the benefits offered. DART drivers possessing a commercial driver’s license will have their renewal fee paid. DART provides free bus passes for its employees and immediate family members, and provides service awards. Medical and dental benefits are available only to full-time drivers.
