Becoming a promoter is an arduous but rewarding job. Just ask rapper and music mogul Sean Puffy Combs. Prior to his fame, he worked as a party promoter for parties in college. This work is how he eventually met the right people who led him to his mentor Andre Harrell. So becoming a promoter is definitely a path way toward success - financially and socially. Just be ready to do a lot of hard work.
Decide what type of promoter you want to be and write it down on a piece of paper. This paper should be posted on your refrigerator or on your bathroom mirror. Why? You need to look it several times a day so you don’t lose focus. So if you want to be a party promoter, you don’t want to end up promoting a sketchy friend who says they want to sing in a rock band.
Create a business plan. Part of becoming a promoter is having a plan towards success. It won’t happen without direction. You’ve heard the saying, “if you don’t plan to win, you plan to fail.” This statement is true. So write out how you are going to be the best ____ promoter in your town, city or the world.
Work out the financial end of becoming a promoter. How much do you have “now” to promote a person, party or product? You will need to consider how much it costs to print out flyers, hire a crew to hand them out, throw pre-event parties and other things that perk the interest of people. Even if you only have $10 to work with, you can still get started by spreading news by “word of mouth.” Also, most importantly, decide how much your services are worth. What do you want to charge people?
Find a job where you can work as a promoter. Many people become promoters because they have a friend who needs help and trusts them. You may want to start in the “friendship” arena first. You can even do your first promotion free. It will be a way of getting your name out to the public.
Be a promoter. Promote your first job. Use a variety of avenues: word of mouth, flyers, Internet social sites and mixers. All of these things are the usual formats of promoting anything. So use them and put your spin on them.
Build your reputation and business as the money comes in. It would be nice if every time anyone wanted to do something, everything were perfectly set in place. However, this is real life. So as you bring in funds, add on the necessity to your promotion business like business cards and people.
Learn from your failures. On your way to becoming a promoter, understand you will fail. It’s a part of learning how to do any job better. So, assess them as they come. Figure out how to promote better. Also, get feed back from your customers. They are the ones who will tell you the truth about your service.
Be excited about whatever you promote, so others will be influenced to feel the same way.
