How to Write a Current Resume

To a potential employer, your resume is a reflection of who you are. Before you start applying for new jobs, take time to update your resume. It should reflect your most recent experience, as well as any new skills you may have acquired since you last looked for a job. Create a professional, up-to-date resume to help you make a good first impression to employers and increase your chances of getting hired.

Type your contact information at the top of your resume. Include your full legal name, your address, your home phone number, your cell phone number and your email address. Future employers will need this information to contact you with job offers, and placing it at the top of your resume makes it easier to find.

Describe your goal or objective. Tell the employer exactly what job you are applying for and what you hope to accomplish by applying. This should be a two or three line summary. Avoid long paragraphs because these can bore employers, and that is not the impression you want to make.

Make a list of your skills. Don’t write them in paragraph or sentence form. A bullet list is easier for employers to glance at and determine if your skills are relevant to the job. When you list your skills, keep the job you are applying for in mind.

Add any achievements that you feel can help you get the job. Personal or business accomplishments that prove you have the ability to work hard, or show your dedication and drive can impress employers. List these accomplishments with bullet points in a section titled “Personal and Professional Achievements.”

Arrange your work history by placing your most recent job at the top of the list. For each job you have worked, include the company name, your title or position, your responsibilities, your accomplishments at the job and the dates you worked there.

Mention your education in your resume. List your highest degree first, along with the school you studied at, and the date you graduated. Remember to mention the field your degree is in. For example, rather than saying you received a Bachelor of Arts, specify that your degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

List at least three references at the bottom of your resume. References can verify your credentials as an employee, or reassure employers about your personal qualities. Include at least one personal reference and one professional reference. Your third reference can be either. Provide contact information for your references, so that potential employers can reach them.
