A wholesale license is required in North Carolina to sell goods to retail businesses and other companies. The wholesale license allows you to purchase and resell products without having to pay sales tax to the manufacturer or collect tax from the retailer. You'll be considered exempt from these taxes once you've registered your business and have been approved for a wholesale license. Obtaining a wholesale license from the N.C. Department of Revenue is relatively simple.
Obtain the North Carolina Department of Revenue NC-BR form: Business Registration Application for Income Tax Withholding, Sales and Use Tax, and Machinery, Equipment, and Manufacturing Fuel Tax. You can obtain this form online at DORNC.com.
Fill out the form completely and accurately. Ensure that you check the box in Section III for Wholesale, or Wholesale and Retail sales.
Print out the form to keep a copy for your personal records, then submit the form via the online submission process. Online submissions are recommended by the DORNC, but you can mail the form to N.C. Department of Revenue, P.O. Box 25000, Raleigh, NC 27640.
