To become a notary public, you must first determine whether you meet the requirements for becoming a notary. The rules are different in each state with the exception of age; all notaries public must be at least 18 years of age to apply. Some states require that notary applicants take a notary class and pass an exam on the notary laws in their state. If your state requires you to pass the notary exam, you might be able to take the exam online.

Check with your state’s notary department to see if online notary tests are available for you to take.

See if your state’s notary department lists notary public exam centers and websites on its website. If not, you will have to search on your own for online notary exams in your state.

Sign up to take the notary class. Most require that you spend a set number of hours in the class before you can take the exam.

Take the exam. Print out your results and mail them with your notary public application to the appropriate location for your state.
