People who perform data entry jobs are called data entry clerks or operators but may become data entry specialists or supervisors with experience. The companies that hire people to do data entry do so to collect and present data that they gather that may be important in how they run their business. Although companies that hire data entry specialists don’t require you to have any special education, it does require special skills to be able to perform the tasks at hand.
The main job of someone who performs data entry work is to record and input data into a database such as a spreadsheet in a computer program or any other kind of data recording software. This can include any kind of data such as phone numbers, email or home addresses, names of people, companies and businesses, or information about sales or even schedules of events. Some companies that hire people to perform data entry work also require them to fulfill administrative duties such as filing documents and setting appointments, for example.
Many types of companies hire people to perform data entry tasks. Companies that sell a product or a service, for example, need someone to input data about their account receivables, inventory and invoices. Pharmaceutical and medical firms hire people to input data about prescription orders and patients' records. Call centers need data entry operators to input data about client allocations, backorder releases and cancels, shipment adjustments, rush orders, corrections, and closings.
Companies that hire people to perform data entry work are found throughout the United States. These companies either hire people to work on a full-time or part-time basis on location. However, there are some companies to hire people to perform data entry tasks from home and that require you to input data into either a spreadsheet that you can email to the company or to input data onto an online database.
The salary for a data entry position depends on the number of years experience that you have. According to PayScale.com, if you have less than one year experience you may receive a salary of about $9.34 to $11.78 an hour. If you have four years experience you may receive a salary of about $9.69 to $12.49 an hour. If you have five to nine years experience you may receive a salary of about $10.30 to $14.29 an hour. If you have 10 to 19 years experience you may receive a salary of about $10.97 to $15.03 an hour. If you have experience of 20 years or more you may receive a salary of about $10.94 to $15.19 an hour.
Skills and Qualifications
The skills and qualifications needed to be hired for a data entry position include being a good typist to be able to input data quickly and accurately and have an eye for detail. You must at least be a high school graduate, be able to focus and concentrate, work under minimum supervision, and be knowledgeable in basic computer word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software programs.
