New Jersey bartenders are not required by state law to hold a license. There is a certification option for bartenders in New Jersey, and there are laws relating to bartenders that are important to know. Getting certified as a bartender in New Jersey is simple and makes getting a job as a bartender much easier throughout the state.

Obtain a photo identification card. New Jersey law prohibits anyone younger than 21 to serve, sell or drink alcoholic beverages. Becoming certified as a bartender in New Jersey requires a photo ID proving actual age as 21 or older.

Take a bartending course. There are bartending schools throughout the state that offer one- to two-week programs. These programs teach bartenders their job. It includes making drinks, determining whether an ID is fake or legitimate, and other duties and responsibilities of a bartender.

Obtain certification. Certification is obtained at the end of a bartending course. The certification informs potential employers that the course was completed and that the bartender not only knows how to make drinks, but also knows his other duties, responsibilities, including ethics and checking IDs.
