How to Become an Insurance Adjuster in Texas

An insurance adjuster is part investigator, part inspector and part researcher. Adjusters investigate insurance claims filed by policyholders, they inspect property damages, and they conduct research by interviewing witnesses or reviewing medical records. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a growing demand for insurance adjusters within the health insurance industry. Insurance adjusters must be licensed. Licensing requires the completion of pre-licensing courses, passing a state licensing exam or both. Each state has its own licensing process. In Texas, for example, insurance adjuster applicants have the option of completing a state-approved course study or taking a state licensing exam.

Determine whether you must take an exam. There are various licenses for adjusters. Some licenses require exams and others do not. Refer to the License Types and Description Chart on the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) website. If you are an Adjuster Trainee, for example, you are exempt from taking the state licensing exam.

Complete TDI certified courses. These pre-licensing courses are available from a variety of state-approved educational institutions. Find a provider by searching the on-line database on the TDI website. Contact a provider for enrollment, schedule and fee information. After you complete the course, the provider will present you with a Letter of Certification.

Submit fingerprints. Schedule an appointment with L1 Enrollment Services. Appointments are scheduled online on the L1 Enrollment website or by phone at 888-467-2080. The fingerprints are sent to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a criminal background check. As of early 2010, the fingerprinting cost includes a processing fee of $34.25 along with a $9.95 service fee charge.

Take the state licensing exam. Register and schedule an exam date with Prometric, the authorized licensing testing center for the state of Texas. Registration and scheduling are done on the Internet, by phone, by mail or by fax. A copy of a blank registration form is included in the Licensing Information Bulletin. As of early 2010 exam fees ranged from $55 to $75.

Submit an application. Applicants who are required to take the state exam must complete the Texas Insurance License Application. A copy of the blank application is included in Licensing Information Bulletin. Mail the application to: Oak Hill Technology, Inc. 4544 South Lamar Suite 710 Austin, TX 78745 As of early 2010, the license fee is $50 per license type. Each license type requires a separate application. After you have passed the exam, completed the application process and paid the fees, your license will be mailed to you.


Review the Licensing Information Bulletin. The bulletin provides a detailed overview of both the exam and the insurance licensing process. The bulletin is available on the Prometric website.

A minimum score of 70 percent is required for passing the exam.

Prometric offers online practice exams.

Applicants who are exempt from the exam must complete and submit a different application referred to as the License Application LHL206 (Individual). Mail the application to TDI.

Continuing education courses are required prior to license renewal. Licenses are renewed every 2 years.
