How to Create a Resume Cover Page

A resume cover page is the first glimpse a potential employer will get of you. Many employers receive more resumes than they could possibly read, so they skim cover letters. A boring cover letter is sure to get your application thrown in the trash. You need to create a resume cover page that is clear and to the point. Tell the employer you want the job, why you should get it and when you will be calling back to check on it. Applicants who send in cover letters with personality are more likely to get calls for interviews.

Type your name, address and phone number in the right-hand corner. This is a business letter, and you want to set it up like one. Type the address of the company on the left-hand side of the cover page underneath your address. Insert the date a few lines underneath the company address.

Address the resume cover page to the person in charge of hiring. If you do not know to whom resumes are to be sent, call the company and ask. Very rarely will staff refuse to give you the person’s name. It is more professional for the hiring manager to see a letter addressed to himself than to “hiring manager.”

Express your interest in the position in the first paragraph of the cover page. Get straight to the point. Do not start the letter with, “My name is so and so.” This will be evident by your signature at the bottom. Show you have researched the company by listing specific reasons you are interested in this position.

Explain why you are the best candidate for the position in the second paragraph. Read the job description carefully and determine what qualities the hiring manager is looking for. Focus on the qualities that you have. Do not mention that you do not possess certain qualities but feel you are qualified anyway. A good way to start this paragraph is, “Based on my experience in ****, , and __, I feel I would be a great match for this position.” Mention any relevant awards you have received or special projects you have worked on. If the position requires a degree and you have one, mention it.

Describe how you will follow up the resume and cover letter. Tell the employer that you will be calling in ___ days to check in. If you are not comfortable checking on the status of your application, you will at least want to know your resume was received. Some job ads request that applicants do not call the office to check on the status of applications. In this case, simply end the cover page with, “Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.”

Always research a company before applying to make sure it is a position you really want.

Wait at least three days before calling to confirm your resume was received. Wait seven to 10 days before calling to check on your application status.

Explain why you are great for the position, but refrain from sounding too arrogant.
