Illinois Chauffeur License Requirements

A chauffeur is a person hired to drive a passenger vehicle, such as a luxury vehicle, large sedan, limousine or SUV. Chauffeurs can be hired to drive someone’s personal vehicle. More common today are chauffeur service companies, which provide individual drivers and vehicles for hire. Chauffeurs are required to wear a uniform or suit, be well groomed and demonstrate proper etiquette of opening doors for passengers and assisting with luggage. Becoming a chauffeur in Illinois requires applicants to obtain a state driver's license.

Age Requirements

A valid Class D license is required to be a chauffeur in Illinois. Chauffeurs have to be at least 18 or older to work in an occupation transporting people. A chauffeur with a Class D license cannot transport more than 10 people. The type of vehicle driven has to be a considered a passenger vehicle.

General License Requirements

Candidates seeking an Illinois chauffeur Class D license have to provide proof of written signature, proof of date of birth, proof of valid Social Security number and proof of residency within the state of Illinois. Proper document requirements for written signature verification include a canceled check, a government-issued ID or a court order. Acceptable documents for proof of date of birth include adoption records, original birth certificate or an official grade school/high school transcript. A Social Security card or a military service record can be used to verify a Social Security number. Residency status is verified by a credit report issued by Experian, Equifax or TransUnion; a deed; or a rental or lease agreement. The license fee is $30.

Written Test

Illinois requires drivers to pass a written exam that tests knowledge of traffic signs, signals, pavement markings and basic rules of the road. Applicants can prepare for the test by studying the driving manual “Illinois Rules of the Road.” The test has to be taken every eight years. It is waived for drivers with no traffic violations. The test is issued by the Illinois Office of the Secretary of State. A driving permit is issued after successfully passing the written test and is valid for driving with a friend or relative over the age of 21 who has had a valid license for at least one year.

Driving Test

To obtain an Illinois chauffeur Class D license, applicants must pass a driving test. Tests are administered at Secretary of State Office facility. Times and days may vary, and tests are not allowed when it is dark outside or in adverse weather conditions. A registered vehicle that is insured and has valid plates is required to take the driving test. The car has to be in good working condition, with blinkers, headlights and taillights functioning properly. After passing the driving test, applicants are issued a chauffeur Class D license that is valid for four years.
