Many organizations deliver packages, products and goods to businesses and individuals. A route manager drives to locations to deliver goods and manages customers in a designated regional area.
Qualifications
Most employers require that route manager candidates have a high school diploma or GED certificate. Employers also require a commercial driver's license (CDL), which allows individuals to drive vehicles over 26,001 pounds. A route manager must also have good customer service and time management skills.
Responsibilities
A route manager's daily responsibilities include loading a delivery truck with the day's scheduled deliveries, reviewing shipping orders and selecting the packages for delivery. The route manager then delivers packages to each customer on his designated route. These professionals also demonstrate products and sell additional products to customers. For retail customers, route managers deliver products and set up displays at retail locations to attract consumers.
Salary
In most cases, route managers receive a base salary and a bonus or commission based on sales and customer retention. As of August 2010, job resources portal Indeed listed a national average salary of $42,000 per year for route managers.
