The Salaries of Assistant Coaches at Community Colleges
While head coaches for community colleges receive little fanfare, their assistants receive even less. In fact, it is common for assistant coaches at community colleges to volunteer their time. Some coaches may receive stipends. In either case, these coaches are among the lowest paid in their profession.
Average Salary
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists the average salary of coaches at colleges, universities and professional schools at $49,140 as of 2010. The salaries of assistant community college coaches are well below this figure. An August 2011 posting by an NCAA career website seeking an assistant coach for Hartford Community College lists the salary at $2,350 yearly.
Closer Look
The assistant coach for a community college may receive the equivalent of a stipend. Shelton State Community College, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, lists the average yearly salary of its three assistant coaches for the men's teams at $1,200 for the year. This figure is the same for the three assistant coaches for the women's teams. Men's team sports include basketball, baseball and golf. Women's team sports include basketball, soccer and softball. At Otero Junior College, in La Junta, Colorado, the average salary for assistant coaches for the men's sports teams is $12,742 as of 2011, according to Match College. This figure is the same for assistant coaches for women's sports teams.
Salary Considerations
Assistant coaches may earn additional money by teaching or via other careers. Additional money may be earned from basketball camps and bonuses provided by the institution. Registration fees for camps can be close to $200 for a single registrant and five registrants for a single session can earn a coach close to $1,000 in extra salary for a single session, as noted in a 2011 Modesto Junior College posting. Assistant coaches who merely help conduct such camps may earn less, depending on the number of registrants.
In Comparison
Assistant coaches for larger colleges and universities often earn six-figure salaries. Examples are the assistant basketball coaches at the University of Florida who earn between $100,000 and $250,000 annually as of publication. Head coaches at community colleges do not make six-figure salaries and assistant coaches make minimum wage salaries or less based on the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour for 2,080 hours, the figure used by the BLS to determine annual wages.
