Safe workplaces don’t just happen overnight. It takes dedication to build a workplace culture that embraces safe practices. Hazardous working conditions may lead to increased employee accidents and counterproductive business operations. Promoting safety ideas helps employees keep their well-being a top priority. Find ways to incorporate safety issues into daily life in the workplace.
Reinforce that workplace safety is about more than preventing falls and machine injuries. Some workers may tune out the message if they feel that it doesn’t apply to their work duties. Address issues such as workplace violence and communicable disease prevention. Invite a variety of guest speakers to discuss techniques for staying safe in the workplace. Suitable guest speakers include fire chiefs, police officers and health department officials.
Designate a safety team to monitor the workplace for accidents and safety violations. Include department heads along with proactive regular employees. Encourage team members to observe workers for issues such as unsafe machinery handling and dangerous dress code violations. Ask them to report issues with company property along with recommendations for corrective action.
Post safety bulletins in high-visibility areas. Break rooms, lobbies and dining facilities are perfect places to display safety messages. Choose bright, eye-catching posters to spark discussions. Sponsoring an annual safety poster design and caption contest will ensure ongoing access to creative material.
Make safety training a mandatory annual event. This shows your commitment to providing a safe work environment. Discuss positive and negative safety trends in your workplace. Go over safety policies in the employee handbook. Include new information from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Administer a test at the end of training to ensure comprehension.
Designate a week as workplace safety awareness week. Devote each day to a different safety issue to prevent monotony. Schedule activities such as fire drills, food handling courses and handwashing demonstrations. Engage in safety-themed trivia contests, relay races and art exhibitions. Making an annual company safety song is another way to promote unity and safe working conditions.
Give incentives when workers remain safe. Honor departments with low incidents of accidents and most improved safety records. Set up challenges to encourage staff to make safety an ongoing concern. An example is providing an extra vacation day to all workers if the staff can go 100 days without an accident.
Encourage workers to report safety violations. Issues such as broken door locks, faulty wiring and broken steps should be discussed beyond the water cooler. Set up an anonymous box in the break room to encourage shy workers to participate. Follow up on all reports promptly, even when you won’t be able to fix problems immediately. Failing to do so destroys company credibility.
