Many trucking companies work in the northeastern United States. Some of these companies are based in the area and have headquarters there, and to some the Northeast is one region among many where they transport goods. Trucking companies in the region prefer to hire drivers in the area, and often offer bonuses to those willing to drive in the Northeast.

New England Motor Freight

New England Motor Freight started as a small regional carrier owned by a dairy company. NEMF specializes in LTL, or less-than-truckload, loads rather than OTR, over-the-road, or long-haul trucking. Although it still covers the northeastern states, NEMF has now expanded into Florida, Canada and Puerto Rico. The company has grown from 12 terminals and 1,600 employees in 1989 to 4,000 employees and 35 terminals in 2009. Contact NEMF at:

1-71 North Avenue East Elizabeth, NJ 07201 (908) 965-0100 www.nemf.com

Transport Systems, Inc.

Transport Systems Inc. is primarily a short-haul trucking company that works most often in the northeastern region but also handles long-haul jobs within 1,000 miles of its operations in New York. This allows the carrier to guarantee speedy delivery, often the next day. Transport Systems, Inc. 170 Mount Airy Road Basking Ridge, NJ 07920 (908) 766-1100 www.transportsystemsinc.com

Heartland Express

Heartland Express provides both long-haul and regional transportation services. The company has partnered with SmartWay in an effort to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency and takes pride in its late-model fleet and numerous safety features. Heartland Express has trucking services in almost every state in the country but operates regional headquarters in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, which allows regional company drivers to deliver to the area quickly and spend more time at home. Drivers in the Northeast also have the opportunity to take part in Heartland’s Green Miles program, which gives bonuses to drivers willing to travel east of Interstate 81. Heartland Express 901 N. Kansas Avenue North Liberty, IA 52317 (319) 626-3600 www.heartlandexpress.com

Crete Carrier

Crete is one of the largest trucking companies in the United States. The Crete family encompasses not only Crete Carrier but also Shaffer Trucking and Hunt Transportation. Crete has numerous terminal locations, but one of its major hubs is the northeast region, which covers everything north and east of Virginia, eastern Ohio, North Carolina and West Virginia.
