A case manager is someone who provides a variety of services and resources in order to help their clients better cope with situations, daily life and personal problems. In order to become a case manager, you will need a formal education in psychology, social work or nursing. Additional requirements include obtaining certification and completing an internship.
Obtain a Bachelor's Degree
In order to become a case manager, you are required to have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university. Case managers can have undergraduate degrees in psychology, social work and/or nursing. A bachelor of science degree, however, would be the most helpful because nursing students not only have to participate in clinical sessions, but they are also taught how to fill out forms and record status updates correctly. All of which are parts of the case manager's job title. It also will help your prospects in the job market if you completed clinical work at the undergraduate level. Graduate degrees, such as a master's, will only help you to find a job quicker and obtain a larger salary directly out of school.
According to the National Association of Social Workers, case managers can obtain certification from the Case Management Society of America, CMSA, or the Commission for Case Manager Certification, CCMC. Obtaining voluntary certification will help you further yourself in the job market. Voluntary certification involves taking extra coursework on ethical issues, health care systems and patients rights. These classes are only available to nurses and social workers who have experience within the field.
Complete an Internship
An internship will offer you hands-on experience that you may not have gotten in your undergraduate program. By taking an internship in a hospital, rehabilitation center, assisted-living facility or clinic, you are demonstrating your dedication to the field and showing your leadership skills as a rising professional. An internship will help you to make real-world connections within your field.
