Laboratory technicians are employed to assist scientists and doctors in a laboratory setting. The role involves sampling, testing, measuring and analyzing results in biological, chemical, physical and life sciences. Entry into the profession typically requires a degree in a science-based area. Previous lab experience proves beneficial when trying to secure work. An interview can be daunting, but you can feel prepared and ready if you think about the questions the interviewer is likely to ask and how you would answer them.

Lab Tech Characteristics

An employer might ask, "What characteristics do you think laboratory technician should have?" to ensure you understand the basic requirements of what the job entails and to determine if you can fulfill these requirements. In your response to this question, mention that a laboratory technician should be able to apply both skills and knowledge practically. A lab technician is also required to have expert knowledge in their field, good hand-to-eye coordination, excellent oral communication skills and the ability to pay close attention to detail.

Lab Tech Education and Training

Different qualifications are necessary in different sectors, so an interviewer might ask, "What educational qualifications do you hold?". An employer needs to determine that a candidate has the necessary skills to competently and safely carry out the role. Those employed in a clinical lab may be required to be licensed by the state, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Answer honestly and make the employer aware of any continuing professional education that you may still be competing. Take any academic qualifications and certificates to the interview, along with a resume.

Lab Tech Problem-Solving

Another possible query might be, "How do you ensure you pay attention to detail when working in the lab?" The interviewer looks for demonstrated experience in your answer. Give an example of a previous situation or task you have carried out that has highlighted the importance of attention to detail. If this is your first application to a laboratory technician role, give an example where attention to detail was of great importance when completing an internship, during study or at a work experience placement. Giving examples rather than simply offering an explanation helps the interviewer understand your previous experiences.

Lab Tech Experience

Think about your previous job roles and experiences while studying when the interviewer asks, "What types of testing have you personally performed?". What equipment have you used and what would you like to experience more of in the future. Research the company to find out what type of testing they carry out. Think about how your skills match what they are looking for and remember to mention these to the interviewer.
