Beginning a career as a bank teller, regardless of the institution, requires a number of skills. In addition to outstanding communication skills in working with the public, a teller is required to comprehend mathematics, be trustworthy and represent the bank in a professional manner. To assist in the hiring process, many banks require prospective tellers to take and pass a pre-employment assessment test to help ensure a candidate has the requisite skill set. Operations

Generally the largest percentage of questions on a bank teller test are in regards to the day-to-day functions of the role. These functions will include handling cash, basic banking transactions (deposits and withdrawals) and balancing funds. Banking Industry Regulations

Banking is a highly regulated industry, particularly now after the role the financial services industry played in the recession. Additional rules and regulations have been enacted and the bank teller exam will require a basic understanding of the industry. It is not likely a new teller will need to fully comprehend all the regulations pertaining to the industry, but understanding the need and purpose of these regulations is likely to be important. Also, being able to demonstrate the value of confidentiality is part of the bank teller test. Working so intimately with customers' financial information requires discretion.

Business and Ethics

The final areas of the teller exam include working with and for fellow employees and bank management. This will require demonstrating strong communication and listening skills, in addition to a high level of professionalism. Working so closely with customer's money, often in large sums, requires individuals with high moral standards and ethics. A part of the exam will likely measure the value placed on having and maintaining high ethical standards, both personally and professionally.
