The British Columbia Real Estate Association oversees for more than 18,000 Realtors. In addition to the Realtors who are members of the association, independent Realtors also operate in this Canadian province. Area Realtors work to encourage economic verve, respect the environment, strengthen communities and help residents of the province locate and secure quality housing. Regardless of whether you want to be affiliated with the Real Estate Association or work independently, you must complete the steps outlined by the Real Estate Council of British Columbia before you are licensed to become a Realtor in the province. Because there are several types of Realtor licenses, including trading services or sales, strata management, associate broker and managing broker, it is important to know the type of licensing you are seeking. This article will cover the steps to become a licensed trading services Realtor.

Fill in the application for pre-screening (see Resources). Supply your name, mailing address and other information for the council to conduct a background review. Sign and return the completed application to the Real Estate Council office at Suite 900-750 West Pender St., Vancouver, BC Canada V6C 2T8. Include the pre-screening fee with your application.

Register with Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia to take the self-paced, online Real Estate Trading Services Licensing Course (see Resources). Review the course overview and content. Pay the applicable tuition and fees.

Study the course materials, complete the assingments and take the examination. Give yourself time to become familiar with the course content and related study materials. Take advantage of the tutorial assistance and lectures provided with the course to avoid spending additional money on private tutoring. Complete the three-hour tests at the end of the course. The 20-assignment course typically takes students six months to complete.

Contact the British Columbia Real Estate Association. Register to take the required five-day classroom Residential Trading Services Applied Practice course (see Resources). Check the association’s website for a list of upcoming and available classes. Classes are offered throughout Vancouver, Surrey, Prince George, Kelowna and Nanaimo. Complete the online application or download and mail your form with the required fees to British Columbia Real Estate Association, 1420 - 701 Georgia St. West, P.O. Box 10123, Pacific Centre, Vancouver, BC V7Y 1C6.

Apply for a license. Complete the Real Estate Council of British Columbia’s online application for a Representative, Associate or Managing Broker license (see Resources). Check off “Trading Services” to note the type of license you are applying for under the “Level of license applied for” section of the application. Pay licensing fees and mail the completed application to the Real Estate Council office at Suite 900-750 West Pender St., Vancouver, BC Canada V6C 2T8.
