There are some specific things you can do to look thinner when going to that all-important job interview. This starts with the right attitude and a crisp, smart and well-thought out outfit. Read on for some specific ideas on how to dress your best.

Choose wisely. Dark colors, long jackets and monochromatic looks are your best choices. But be careful about too much black. You don't want to look like you're on your way to a funeral. Dark navy with or without a vertical pinstripe is a good choice in wool or, for warm weather, a rayon or silk blend. Jackets are great for covering up "borderline" full figures. Whatever you wear, make sure it fits you well and you are comfortable and relaxed in the garment.

Dress even dressier than the average candidate. Never look sloppy or mismatched for an interview. A suit, dress with jacket or formal pantsuit will give you that serious candidate edge. While it is true that the rules for interview attire have relaxed in recent years, for the larger woman, it is best to retain formality. Since others will be dressed more casually, you will appear even more serious and dedicated than the others.

Keep your buttons buttoned high around the neck and wear larger jewelry pieces, though do so sparingly. A pair of nice pearl or gem stone earrings with a bracelet or necklace is all you need to look elegant. Jewelry that is too small and dainty looks too delicate on a larger-sized woman and only draws attention to her plus-sized figure.

Select the right pair of shoes. Never wear an open toed-shoe to a job interview. Even designer sandals are off limits and will look frivolous. The shoes should be high quality leather and should have some heel but not too much. One or two inch heels are fine and will help you feel more grounded when you strut across the room. Flats are not appropriate for an interview.

Walk with confidence and a spring in your step. Even when a woman is overweight, if she carries herself with pride and confidence, she looks graceful and poised. You know in your heart that you have what it takes to do the job and that a number on a scale has nothing whatsoever to do with your ability to succeed at whatever you choose to do.

Tip

Hold your head high when you walk. Smile. People create positive associations in their minds when they see and communicate with a smiling, enthusiastic person. It's okay to be a little sassy. Just make your attitude positive and embracing. Dress up, iron your clothes, put your hair up or style it neatly. Do wear panty hose, no bare legs. Wear vertical stripes to appear slimmer.

Warning

Don't wear frilly or lacy blouses or dresses. Don't wear heels that are too high or shoes that are too casual. Don't look frumpy. Don't overdo your makeup. Don't have wild looking fingernails.
