How to Become a Marriage Counselor
Decide if it’s the right career path for you. Do you enjoy giving advice? Do you have the compassion and patience to help people work through their problems? You’ll also need to have a thick skin and be able to handle criticism well and not take it personally if your advice isn’t well received.
Get an education. Go online and research schools that may offer the courses you need. Take a close look at their curriculum. You may need a graduate degree in psychology or social work. Some states require you to have a license.
Get as much experience as possible. You can get started by volunteering while you are still in school. This will give you the opportunity to see if this is really a career you want to pursue. It’s also a great way to get some training and potential references. If you really impress the company you are volunteering for, you may even be offered a job there after you graduate.
