Marketing is a demanding career path. Mangers, even those at the assistant level, are expected to meet deadlines and produce results at every turn. Assistant marketing managers also need a diverse set of skills. Successful marketers are creative and analytical. They must also be able to thrive under pressure and exhibit excellent communication skills.

Duties

Assistant marketing managers help their superiors create and execute marketing strategies. These strategies have many elements with the common goal of increasing sales and profits. Marketing professionals may set the price for a product, design promotions to increase sales and conduct research on consumers. They are also involved with product development.

Some assistant marketing managers supervise marketing representatives and other entry-level employees. Others are responsible for marketing a particular region, product or department. Specific duties and level of responsibility vary from position to position.

Job Requirements

Recruiters often look for candidates with a collegiate degree in marketing. Completed coursework in other business-related fields such as accounting and management is also desirable. Work experience is also important. A successful marketing internship or other relevant experience establishes a candidate’s ability to provide results.

Special training or degrees may be required for candidates trying to break into highly technical industries. For example, assistant marketing manager positions at a computer manufacturing company may call for a degree in engineering.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, marketing managers perform most of their work in offices, but regular travel may be required to meet with customers. The work environment is described as hectic and fast-paced. Employers push marketing managers to meet deadlines and sales targets. Many assistant marketing managers work weekends and evenings to ensure these goals are accomplished. Extended work schedules are commonplace.

Job Outlook

BLS experts predict the number of marketing manager jobs will grow 12 percent through 2018. This is on par with the overall national job growth rate. Additional jobs will also open up as workers retire or leave the workforce for other reasons. However, experts go on to say that competition for all marketing manager jobs will be strong. Marketing positions attract professionals from a variety of professions, and there are simply more candidates than jobs.

Earnings

According to a 2009 report from the BLS, half of all marketing managers earned an annual salary between $78,340 and $149,390. Assistant marketing manager salaries are likely at the bottom of the salary range because they are not as experienced as senior managers. Wages vary by location as well. BLS experts report that managers working in New York, New Jersey and California took home the most.

2016 Salary Information for Sales Managers

Sales managers earned a median annual salary of $117,960 in 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the low end, sales managers earned a 25th percentile salary of $79,420, meaning 75 percent earned more than this amount. The 75th percentile salary is $168,300, meaning 25 percent earn more. In 2016, 385,500 people were employed in the U.S. as sales managers.
