Tips on Resume Writing Regarding Computer Skills

Growth Trends for Related Jobs

Job applicants often include computer skills on their resumes to highlight important technical skills related to the position. You might have a separate section on your resume called "Computer Skills" or "Computer Proficiencies," or you can incorporate those skills into your education and work experience sections. Focus on computer skills that directly relate to responsibilities associated with the job.

List Specific Software Programs

Employers typically expect job applicants to be familiar with basic computer operations, such as word processing, email applications and the ability to locate and save files. Avoid listing general computer skills and focus on specific programs or computer applications, such as publishing software or Web page design programs you've used. For example, if the job requires art or graphics applications, you might list Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, Maya and Shade on your resume. If the job requires Web page design experience, you might list JavaScript, Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash and Macromedia ColdFusion on your resume.

Show How You Used Computers On the Job

Explain how you've used specific programs or computer applications at previous jobs. Your ability to translate computer skills into the marketplace is a valuable job skill. For example, if you designed a computer system that made it easier to network with other departments at your company, list that experience. Or, if you used AutoCAD to design a new factory or an office complex for a client, list those on-the-job computer applications. Employers want assurance that you'll put your computer skills to good use by increasing productivity, completing assignments or soliciting new business.

Focus Solely on Proficiencies

Only list computer programs and computer applications for which you have a high level of proficiency. Don't include computer programs that you've barely used, even if they're listed in the job ad. You don't want to oversell your skills and abilities or get in over your head. If you're invited to interview for the job, you can always assure the hiring manager that you're willing to learn any new software programs or computer applications needed for the position.

Provide Skills Relevant to the Position

Focus on computer skills that directly relate to the responsibilities of the job, and list those first. For example, if you're applying for a bookkeeping or an accounting position, list your experience with QuickBooks, Peachtree Sage 50 or AccountEdge first. You might also list proficiencies in administrative or database programs, such as Microsoft Access or FileMaker Pro. List other computer skills last. Include computer certifications and computer-related academic coursework on your resume in the "Education" or "Certifications" sections.
