In the Army, aviators hold at least a warrant officer rank, so the first step to getting into helicopter flight school is to meet the requirements to pin on the WO1 rank insignia. Besides meeting the warrant officer ASVAB test minimums, you will need to take and post an acceptable score on the Flight Aptitude Selection Test.

Army's Aptitude Test

The U.S. Army administers the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery first to determine if someone will be allowed to enlist in the Army and then to rank the person for the wide range of career fields offered by the military service. The ASVAB tests your knowledge in nine areas ranging from reading comprehension to automotive maintenance. The scores from the nine test areas are then combined in different ways to give 10 different "line scores," which are used to determine suitability for the different possible Army jobs.

Warrant Officer Requirements

The Army requires that future helicopter pilots meet the requirements to be trained and promoted to warrant officer. The four warrant officer ranks sit between enlisted and regular officer in terms of command and responsibility. The Army uses these ranks to give a higher level of benefits and responsibility to service members working in technical specialty positions. The ASVAB score required to be accepted for warrant officer training school is a 110 on the general technical line score.

General Technical Components

The general technical line score will be calculated from your results on the word knowledge, paragraph comprehension and arithmetic reasoning test areas of the ASVAB. All three of these tests measure your ability to read and understand what has been covered. Paragraph comprehension measures your ability to understand what you are reading, word knowledge tests your understanding of different words with similar or the same meanings and arithmetic reasoning covers your comprehension of math word problems.

Flight Aptitude Test

To be selected for warrant officer and helicopter flight training school, you must also take the Army's Flight Aptitude Selection Test. A score of at least 90 is required on the FAST. The flight aptitude test covers topics like instrument comprehension, complex movements, knowledge about helicopters and mechanical functions. The test determines if you have the basic knowledge and skills the Army requires of its pilots.
