Ladder logic is a programming language used with programmable logic controllers. These systems operate within manufacturing equipment and some of the world's more sophisticated electronics. PLCs have many advantages, like shutting off power without a switch. They are also easy to troubleshoot, allowing for less mechanical downtime.

Familiar Programming Language

Ladder logic was designed to work like relay logic, an older programming language that was already in wide use. Engineers and other computer technicians did not have to return to school or take additional certification courses to learn it, which allowed facilities using ladder logic to remain on schedule.

Cost-Effective Equipment

Ladder logic control systems can operate complex automation hardware functions like the circuits that control an electric motor or a bank vault door. According to the engineering department's web site at Grand Valley State University, ladder logic controls these systems in a cost-effective manner, making the programming language the ideal choice for modern hardware components constructed on the factory floor.

Reliable Parts

The circuits created using ladder logic are simple and therefore more reliable than more intricately built electronic components. This increases the life of products that incorporate them, from mechanical parts to electric outlets. Ladder logic programming is also versatile, allowing engineers to quickly and easily adapt parameters to function over additional systems such as manufacturing controls.
