A pharmacy technician helps a licensed pharmacist prepare prescriptions, work with customers and handle such administrative duties as receiving prescriptions, labeling bottles and counting tablets. Though there is no national standard for training or certification, techs completing a program and earning certification are typically better paid. Reasonably-priced training programs are available on-line and require about six months to complete. Graduates receive a certificate of completion and school certification as a pharmacy technician.

Penn Foster

The online-only Pharmacy Technician Program at the Penn Foster Career School costs $598, as of May 2010, but it is reduced to $498 if paid in full upfront.The charge includes tuition of $434, a $60 administrative fee, a $64 registration fee and a $40 shipping and handling charge for course materials. These costs include all study materials, textbooks and necessary supplies. Penn Foster also works with DANTES (Defense Activation Non-Traditional Educational Support), providing educational funds for off-duty military personnel so they can qualify for tuition reimbursement. Many of their programs qualify for U.S. Armed Forces veterans education benefits. Monthly payment arrangements are possible.

Ashworth College

Ashworth College has a Pharmacy Technician program which costs $979. This course is not available other than on-line. However, according to an admissions representative, the course is normally offered at a substantial discount. The cost, as of May 2010, was $594. An interest-free payment plan is offered at $29 per month. The school also works with students to help with military benefits and employee tuition reimbursement programs.

Allied Schools

The standard cost of the Pharmacy Technician program at Allied Schools is $988, but they offer a $300 discount if paid in full at the time of enrollment, making the cost $688. Allied provides distance learning only and offers no courses on campus.There is an additional fee of $25.00 for shipping course materials; for California students, a sales tax of $11.81 is added. Allied works with military personnel and accepts full tuition assistance for most courses. The school also offers six-month payment plans.

Pharmacy technicians earned a median annual salary of $30,920 in 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the low end, pharmacy technicians earned a 25th percentile salary of $25,170, meaning 75 percent earned more than this amount. The 75th percentile salary is $37,780, meaning 25 percent earn more. In 2016, 402,500 people were employed in the U.S. as pharmacy technicians.
