States have different requirements for mediators such as licensure, registration or certification, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mediators must have good communication skills as well as be knowledgeable in mediation techniques. The mediator also has the ability to analyze information and help parties resolve problems.

Experienced mediators earn the highest salaries in the business. Organizations and courts use mediators with a reputation of successfully resolving disputes between parties, which occurs with years of experience. Mediators with 20 years or more on the job earn average salaries between $88,437 and $122,084 and those with less than a year as a mediator can earn an average salary between $27,000 and $45,000.

Geographic location is one factor in the salary a mediator may earn. The cost of living varies from state to state, which causes differences in the average salary. For example, California mediators earn salaries between $52,080 and $122,084 while those in Florida earn between $36,625 and $90,757. According to My Salary, the cost of living is 36 percent higher in Los Angeles, California than in Jacksonville, Florida.

Self-employed mediators earn the highest salaries between $78,611 and $123,347, according to PayScale. Mediators may also work for a private firm or government employer. State and local governments offer high salaries between $43,745 and $96,317 and those working for private firms earn between $36,625 and $88,437.

A self-employed mediator may earn the highest average salaries, but they do not receive benefits such as paid time off or health insurance. The most popular benefits for mediators, according to PayScale, include paid holidays and vacation, sick time, 401k plans and insurance. Employers create benefits packages to enhance job positions to professional mediators. Self-employed workers must pay for time off, health insurance and other benefits out of the annual salary.
