Growth Trends for Related Jobs
Finding a job can be tough in the best of times, even for well-qualified, experienced people. So for 16-year-olds, it can be especially hard. However many firms in the U.S. actively seek 16-year-olds and there are many entry-level jobs that these young people are well-placed to fill. In general, jobs that require little or no experience are ideal for teenagers and there are many of these types of jobs available if you know where to look.
Restaurants and Food Services
The food services industry has always been a traditional source of jobs for 16-year-olds. Many jobs require minimal training, and there may be an opportunity to benefit from tips. Jobs can be found at fast-food restaurants, table-service restaurants or institutions with cafeterias. This industry traditionally has a high turnover rate, meaning regular opportunities for employment.
Tourism & Seasonal Jobs
The tourism industry can be very seasonal and often large numbers of workers are needed for a short period of time. A direct approach to employers is often the best way to apply for seasonal jobs, rather than waiting for the jobs to be advertised. Express your interest early for any positions, even for next year’s hiring season. Jobs can be found at resorts, hotels, golf courses, amusement parks and other venues that cater to vacationers. Seasonal jobs can also be found at car washes, garden centers, and other service providers that have increased business in the summer.
Cadetships, Apprentices, Internships
Many firms will hire or take on 16-year-olds as trainees or interns with a view to hiring for full time employment at a later point. While not initially paying much, if anything, at first, these opportunities are an excellent way for 16-year-olds to get started and get known within a company. These jobs may lead to excellent and rewarding careers with large and reputable companies or government agencies.
How to Get a Job
There are a variety of different ways to get a job but increasingly a lot of job-seeking and recruitment is now being done online. Online recruiting is very convenient for both parties and enables a job-seeker to apply for many jobs without much effort or expense. Ensure your resume is up to date and well-presented; then sign up to some popular recruitment websites. The other main online way of job-seeking is going direct to the company’s website itself as most large companies have a jobs or careers page with information on whether they are recruiting, what jobs are available and how to apply.
Approaching businesses in person can also be a good way to search for jobs; it allows you to meet a potential employer face to face and shows good initiative.
