Electronics retailer Best Buy offers in-store, online and in-home tech support via their team of experts called the Geek Squad. You’ve probably seen them tooling around town in their signature Volkswagen Beetles – or even needed their help with your stickiest tech issues – and wondered what it takes to work for the Geek Squad. If you have some experience with computers and technology and a commitment to customer service, you’re qualified to become a part of the Geek Squad.

Tip

Best Buy Geek Squad jobs do not require techs to hold any computer certifications, but those certifications can increase your chances of getting a job.

Geek Squad Job Requirements

The specific requirements for a spot on the Geek Squad depend on the role you want to play, because the teams include in-store and in-home technicians; client service agents and consultants; and specialists in appliances, home theater and car audio systems. Most roles require at least six months of experience in a customer service and/or electronics environment, while repair technicians need at least six months to a year of experience diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing technology products. Those who want to work as in-home technicians must be at least 21 years old and have a driver’s license and clean driving record, as well as the ability to lift up to 75 pounds individually and 150 pounds as part of a team.

Mobile Electronics Certified Professional

Although the Geek Squad doesn’t require applicants to have certifications to land a job there, if you wish to become an Autotech, you must complete the Geek Squad employee training program to earn the Mobile Electronics Certified Professional (MECP) designation. The MECP is a nationally recognized credential that certifies technicians in mobile technology installation, including automotive IT such as navigation and security systems. With a clear driving record and some experience in retail sales and installing mobile electronics, you can join the Geek Squad at the entry level and receive training while also working toward earning this certification.

Launching Your Career in IT

Working for the Geek Squad is an entry level IT position for many people, providing a chance to build some experience in the field. Although certifications are not required for these Geek Squad positions, earning the credentials can be beneficial to your future career path. Rasmussen College recommends five specific certifications for entry level IT jobs, including CompTIA A+ Technician, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Network +, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). Any of these certifications can help you meet Geek Squad job requirements.
