Growth Trends for Related Jobs
Founded in 1977 to develop best practices for the telecommunications industry, Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) has evolved to serve information technology systems (ITS) professionals around the world. The organization provides opportunity for professional advancement through its cabling installation and design fundamentals programs as well as professional credential offerings. Each BICSI credential requires that individuals have prior professional-level experience and successfully pass an exam for their chosen credential.
Choose the BICSI credential most relevant to your career. BICSI offers seven credentials that pertain to ITS professionals who specialize in industry areas such as system design (Registered Communications Distribution Designer – RCDD) and safety and security (Electronic Safety and Security Designer – ESS).
Meet the minimum qualifications for your selected credential. Educational and experience criteria vary between the certifications. The Registered Information Technology Professional (RITP) certification requires certain technical degrees or certifications and two years of related experience. Alternatively, the Network Technology Systems Designer (NTS) credential requires two years of related experience and passage of BICSI’s fundamental exam.
Prepare for the exam as necessary. BICSI offers courses relevant to each credential and reference manuals for most credentials to advance ITS professionals’ education as well as prepare them for the exam.
Download the registration packet that corresponds to your desired credential and apply for the exam.
Return all application materials and payment to BICSI headquarters.
Sit for the examination on your assigned date.
Ensure that you complete continuing education opportunities as necessary to maintain your credential. The number of required continuing education credits varies between credentials. For example, the Outside Plant Designer (OSP) credential requires 24 credits while the Wireless Designer (WD) credential requires 36.
