Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) assist individuals being treated in hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient facilities, as well as patients who are home-bound. Duties typically include bathing, grooming, feeding, dressing and taking vital signs. CNAs are required to complete a training course and certification exam before becoming employed. Kentucky offers reciprocity, which means if you completed your training and certification in another state you can simply transfer your credentials without having to repeat the process.

Locate your Indiana CNA certificate. If you cannot find the certificate, use the Internet to visit the Indiana CNA section of the Indiana Department of Health website, at http://www.in.gov/isdh/20510.htm. Request a copy of the information that proves you are enrolled in the Indiana CNA registry. Please note that as of May 2011, the Indiana CNA registry will no longer mail proof of your registration. You will have to download the information from their website and print it for your records.

Use the Internet to visit the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry (KNAR) website. Read the section that explains the procedure regarding reciprocity, located at http://kbn.ky.gov/knar/Reciprocity.htm.

Type and print the following information: your first name, last name, date of birth, Social Security number, mailing address and telephone number. You will also need to include the state you are transferring your CNA certification from and your CNA certification/registration number.

According to CNA-Career.org, your Indiana certification must be current and in good standing with no allegations or findings of abuse or neglect. Any criminal history can be grounds for denial of reciprocity. If your certification has no allegations of abuse or neglect but is not current, you will be required to sit for the Kentucky Nurse Aide Examination.

Renew your KNAR certification when the time comes. Your certification will be valid for two years from the date of issue. At the end of 24 months, you must submit proof that you performed nursing-related duties as a CNA for at least eight hours over the past 24 months and received pay for your work.
