A performance tracking system is a critical need if you want to show your boss how much you accomplished through out the year. Without such a system, you will be talking about your accomplishments without any evidence to support your assertions. A performance tracking system will be the documentation you need to showcase your accomplishments.
Decide if you want to keep track in a paper notebook or in electronic form on your computer. A paper notebook allows you to carry it with you, have it readily available when needed and will not disappear due to a system crash. An electronic copy has the benefit of allowing you to email it to your manager or copy and paste the information into your company's performance management system. You may keep a copy at the office and a copy at home.
Establish categories. Think about the type of projects you are likely to be assigned. Among the many possibilities are financial, human resources, technology, administrative, operations and special activities. Within each category, you may set up sub-categories. This type of breakdown will show how diverse you were during the year.
Document — for each project — the start date and end date, your role, specific actions taken, challenges and how you overcome them, lessons learned and recommended changes.
Start the year with this system in place. Tend to it as part of your daily task list. Add weekly or monthly calendar reminders. Talk about your performance tracking system with your manager during a one-on-one meeting or in a staff meeting.
Start slow and build momentum. Be prepared to make updates during the first several months until you develop a process that works for you.
Do not exclude information because you think it is not important and your manager might not care. All information is critical to this process.
