Check with your human resources department to be sure you comply with company policy. You may be restricted to confirming job title, salary and dates of employment (sad, isn't it?).
Delegate the task of preparing a written recommendation to the employee requesting one. He or she writes it, you sign it.
Focus on the employee's job accomplishments in your oral remarks. Your evaluation of how he or she performed on specific projects have much greater value than broad statements about loyalty or leadership.
Stay in touch. Whatever the circumstances of the employee's separation from your company, if you value this person as a colleague, nurture the relationship.
