Police officers are entrusted with protecting society and its individual members. Since they exercise a lot of authority and discretionary power, people in the profession must be trustworthy and act with integrity.

Official Codes

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has crafted an Oath of Honor to outline the profession's ethical code. In taking the oath, officers promise to uphold public trust, honor the Constitution and act with integrity. The IACP has also developed a set of conduct requirements for the profession.

Ethical Requirements

The police code of ethics, outlined in the Oath of Honor, requires that police officers protect the lives and property of community members. They must also protect people against bullying or oppression. When off duty, the ethical code for police officers requires that they still obey laws and act with honor in all facets of their lives.

Code of Conduct

The code of conduct, outlined by the IACP, forbids police officers from accepting bribes, revealing confidential information or harassing people. The code requires police officers to attempt nonviolent communication before resorting to force. Police officers must also refrain from using excessive force.
