The U.S. Army 75th Ranger Regiment has a long and proud history, dating back to World War II. If you want to join the Rangers after you enlist, you'll need to participate in the necessary training and background checks prior to admission. Once you get your black and red tab, you can be proud to join a relatively small but highly skilled group of soldiers.
Contact an Army recruiter and request and Option 40 contract. No other route is guaranteed to send you to Ranger School. If no contracts are available, you can try again during Basic Combat Training, BCT, or Airborne School.
Attend and complete BCT and Advanced Individual Training, AIT. Your physical fitness training, or PFT, scores and ASVAB, or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery testing must be 240 and 107 on the technical line, respectively.
Select your military occupational specialty, or MOS, that the Rangers use prior to attending AIT. Examples of these MOS are 11B and 11C infantry and indirect fire infantry, 25C telecommunications and 12B combat engineer.
Qualify for and attend Airborne training. You will also perform jumps during the Ranger Assessment and Placement process, or RASP 1. Should you wait until you are rank E-6 or higher to volunteer, you will attend RASP 2.
Wait six months in your current unit prior to applying to Ranger school, per regulations. You will contact your regimental recruiting detachment, or REC-D.
Complete the three-phase Ranger school. Although technically this is not mandatory to join the 75th Regiment, if you hope to advance within the unit you will need your tab. Additionally, you will learn essential movements and operations Rangers use when deployed, as well as becoming a better leader.
Pass your top secret security clearance.
Assemble and submit your application packet. This must include any reviews from your NCO, Form 4187 Personnel Action, your PFT scores and enlisted record brief, or ERB. Your packet must include a valid e-mail address to contact you.
Wait for your orders via email.
More contracts are available for infantry MOS than others. At the time of publication, 150 contracts were open each fiscal year for infantrymen, while 10 or fewer existed for each other MOS.
Be patient during the application process. If your packet is incomplete, delays will occur. Even if everything is perfect and you are approved, it takes around six to eight weeks for orders to reach you.
