Marketing Associate Job Description

Marketing firms and independent companies hire marketing associates to work in their marketing departments. These employees get to know their target customers and identify methods of promoting specific products or services to them. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, marketing associates earned an average of $67,780 in May 2013.

Daily Responsibilities

Marketing associates learn about their target customers by researching current market trends and studying the marketing strategies of competitors. They also analyze past marketing campaigns to determine which approaches achieved the best results. Marketing associates create promotional materials featuring the product and submit these to the marketing director for approval. They organize promotional events to promote their product and give presentations at these events. In addition, they manage social media sites by posting regular updates to generate interest in the product.

Education and Other Attributes

Marketing associates hold a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, business or a related field. They typically have experience working in marketing or sales before moving into the position of marketing associate. In addition to meeting the education requirements, marketing associates need strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate clearly and confidence with public speaking. Other important attributes include creative thinking, a professional attitude and strong organizational skills.

Work Environment

Marketing associates typically work a 40-hour week, incurring overtime when necessary to meet deadlines or for special events. They spend most of their time working in their office brainstorming new marketing approaches or communicating with others via email or telephone. Occasional overnight travel is required to attend trade shows or to meet with customers.

Opportunity and Advancement

The current outlook for marketing associates projects a growth rate of 32 percent from 2012 to 2022, according to the BLS. States with the most job opportunities include California, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The BLS reports that the industries with the highest level of employment include consulting services, company management, computer systems design, advertising or public relations and other professional services.
