Even though no national, government-issued or standardized code of ethics exists for auto mechanics, many repair shops and automotive associations adhere to a set of industry-specific conduct codes. Most stress the importance of providing quality, reliable repairs at an affordable cost and making sure that clients receive excellent customer service. Even though the code of ethics may vary by business or organization, most follow general guidelines that strive to ensure professional business practices.

Parts and Labor Costs

Most trusted mechanics pledge to perform quality repairs and use reliable, proven car parts and products to service their clients' vehicles. Customers rely on auto mechanics to repair and replace vehicle parts at a reasonable cost, without unjustly inflating costs or labor expenses. Car owners depend on mechanics for repairs that are too difficult and complicated for them to perform. Clients want assurance that mechanics haven't marked up prices for personal gain and that costs are reasonably competitive with other mechanics in the area.

Skills and Qualifications

Mechanics who follow a code of ethics guarantee they are trained, equipped and experienced to perform car repairs. Even though auto mechanics don't need academic degrees to perform their duties, some have credentials or certifications to verify their skill sets. Many complete vocational training, get an associate's degree in automotive service technology or obtain certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Certification is available in eight areas -- automatic transmission, brakes, electrical systems, engine performance, engine repair, heating and air-conditioning, manual drive train and suspension, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Others complete extensive on-the-job training or have years of experience to back their skills.

Customer Service

A primary statement in most mechanics' codes of ethics is a commitment to provide excellent customer service. This promise includes prompt appointment scheduling, expert vehicle maintenance checks, pre- and post-service test drives, and reliable price estimates. Trusted mechanics typically establish fair practices for addressing customer complaints and settling disputes related to repairs and service. Many auto mechanics also follow a policy that states they'll ensure the safety and security of your vehicle while it's under their care and supervision. Mechanics generally have insurance to protect against mishaps or theft.

Quality Controls

Auto mechanics often support a code of ethics that says they'll exercise tight quality controls on purchased parts, products and services. For example, they might offer to inspect parts before installation; clearly identify used or refurbished parts; maintain maintenance logs to guard against unnecessary repairs; and follow warranty guidelines for parts and labor. This code ensures that customers get the best care available, without any need to question the integrity of the products or services.
