What is a List of Careers You Can Have Dealing With Houses?

All kinds of houses are being built at amazing speeds, developing into communities all over the nation. In order to get those houses built and occupied, many people are needed to design, construct, decorate and sell them, and there are many careers in the housing industry.

Architect

Beautiful architecture begins with the architect. Architects design homes and buildings based on criteria designated by client orders such as square footage, number of rooms and special features like built-in bookshelves or a patio. In most states, architects must earn a minimum of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university and complete one to three years of training under a licensed architect. Upon completion of training, architects must pass a state licensing exam in order to provide architectural services to the community. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, architects earn an average of $71,320 annually.

Construction Worker

By following the blueprint designs, construction workers use lumber, brick, stone and other building materials to turn the architect's ideas into reality. Construction workers spend much of their time working outside in all types of weather and consulting with other professionals to complete projects according to specific schedules. Although most construction companies do not require a degree, construction workers must generally have a high school diploma. Training is often provided through on-the-job training. The average annual salary of a construction worker according to Payscale.com is between $23,200 and $61,176.

Interior Decorator

Interior decorators are responsible for designing and decorating the inside of homes according to a client's needs and budget. Decorators use their artistic knowledge and talent to coordinate window treatments, wall and floor coverings and furniture to give a room a specific look or feel. Artists may become an interior decorator by completing a specialized training program offered at many colleges and vocational schools and pass a licensing exam given by the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications. Depending on geographical location, experience and specialty, interior decorators can earn between $20,000 and $200,000 annually. Independent decorators and partners generally average higher incomes than those working for larger corporations.

Real Estate Agent

Real estate agents take over once the house is complete both on the inside and out. By working with families to determine their personal needs, real estate agents find, show and sell homes that will be both functional and economical for their client. Real estate agents also assist client's in selling their home when necessary. A high school diploma, specialized courses in real estate and a state licensing exam are required to become a real estate agent. As of May 2010, the average annual salary including commissions for real estate agents was between $27,390 and $64,820.
