Audiometric technicians administer hearing tests and educate patients about hearing loss and other hearing-related issues. You can become an audiometric technician by completing a certification course. The course teaches you about not only the anatomy of the ear and the types of hearing loss people experience, but also how to use the audio testing equipment that catches hearing loss in its early stages. By working as an audiometric technician, you help people preserve their sense of hearing and care for the health of their ears.

Complete high school or a high school equivalence.

Enroll in a course that trains and certifies occupational hearing conservationists (OHCs). Make sure that the course is accredited by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation. These courses are typically 20 hours long and teach you about audiometric techniques, personal hearing protection devices, audiometer operation and other necessary skills.

Complete your course by taking and passing your exams, including an inspection of your practical technique and a written exam.

Tip

Your certification lasts for five years, at which point you must take an eight-hour recertification course.
