Alabama residents looking to work in insurance must obtain an insurance agent license in order to receive commissions as an agent. The Alabama Department of Insurance requires agents to demonstrate their insurance knowledge by taking a state licensing exam before receiving a license. The Department of Insurance doesn’t allow just anyone to sit for the state exam. You must take formal insurance classes beforehand to become eligible to take the exam.

Select a line of authority. A line of authority is your specialty, or type of license you wish to obtain. Alabama Department of Insurance offers several types of licenses. They include Variable Life and Variable Annuity, Property and Casualty, Life and Personal Lines.

Complete the online producer application located on the National Insurance Producer Registry website ( The National Insurance Producer Registry coordinates the paperwork and then submits the application to the Alabama Department of Insurance.

Completing and submitting the application notifies the state that you wish to become a licensed insurance agent and are in the process of meeting the state requirements.

Take the necessary pre-licensing education classes. Alabama requires its insurance agents to complete a certain number of pre-licensing course hours. Hours required vary depending on the line of authority. For example, a Property/Casualty agent is required to take 40 class hours while a Life agent is required to take only 20. Visit the Alabama Department of Insurance website for each line of authority’s class hour requirement.

Locate a state approved education provider. Only courses provided by pre-approved education providers can satisfy the education requirement. The Department of Insurance website contains an extensive list of education providers approved to offer the pre-licensing education classes. Upon completion you will be issued a course certificate which is valid for one year. If you don’t sit for the Alabama state exam within a year of completing the classes, you’ll have to take the classes again.

Register to schedule the state exam. After successfully completing the pre-licensing education requirements you are ready to take the state exam. The state exam is given in five testing centers located in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. Before taking the exam, you must register online by visiting the Online Registration website.

You must bring your certificate of completion to the exam testing site. Without it you won’t be able to sit for the exam.
