How to Become a Journeyman Plumber

A journeyman plumber works under the supervision and guidance of a master plumber. Once you become a journeyman plumber, you have proved that you have a working knowledge of plumbing systems and can perform a variety of duties, including installation, repair and maintenance.

Work for a licensed master plumber as an apprentice. Before you are eligible to become a journeyman plumber, you must have worked as an apprentice with a master plumber. Apprentices do not have to go through any type of certification and can be hired off the street. Each state has different requirements for the working hours required to work as an apprentice. For instance, Washington requires that the individual has 8,000 work hours of experience.

Document your work experience. To register for the journeyman plumber exam, you need an affidavit signed by the licensed master plumber with the number of working hours that you have completed and his certification number.

Complete the schooling required to take the journeyman plumbing exam. You will likely have to go through at least 2 years of taking different courses on plumbing systems. At the end of the course of study, you will be eligible to take the state exam.

Register for a state-issued journeyman plumbing licensing examination. Before taking the exam, you may want to pick up a study guide to prepare, such as the “Journeyman’s Licensing Exam Guide” by R. Dodge Woodson.

Take the journeyman plumbing exam issued by your state. The exam is closed book and consists of the plumbing code requirements issued through the state as well as different facets of plumbing systems. Once you pass the test, you will have a license that states that you are a journeyman plumber.
