From Memphis to Bristol, Tennessee's ballparks need qualified umpires who can make crucial game decisions. Whether you want to officiate at the Little League or collegiate level, you'll need classroom and field training plus experience.

Skills & Education

For this work, a high school education is enough, though some aspiring umpires choose to earn physical education or sports science degrees as well. Active participation on teams and studying handbooks will familiarize you with the rules and regulations of the sport. A sharp eye, attention to detail and good communication skills equip you to make quick judgements on the field.

Training

Umpire camps, such as ones held at Jackson State Community College and Middle Tennessee State University, are generally two to three days in length and cover regional and state regulations. The Tennessee Little League District 5 Association holds clinics year round and provides downloadable handouts on their website.

Certification

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association provides the exams, applications and registration forms you'll need on their site to umpire at middle and high school games. Joining The Collegiate Baseball Umpires Alliance’s state division, for a one-time yearly fee, is mandatory for officiating college games.

Associations

Agencies like The National Association of Sports Officials offers you support and networking opportunities. As a member you’ll receive discounts for their annual summit and magazine. The National Umpires Association website hosts a library of articles, training pages and regulations for Tennessee and other states.
