A consumer advocate manages, administers and coordinates programs and services designed to empower individuals who have been wronged by a corporate or business entity. A typical duty of this role includes connecting consumers with proper legal representation.

Case Management

A consumer advocate manages multiple cases at once. After an initial consultation to assess a case's validity, the advocate develops a plan for resolution, which may include referring the case to a resource provider and lobbying on the client's behalf.

Knowledge of Regulations

In order to successfully perform the duties of a consumer advocate, an individual must be extremely knowledgeable about all local, state and federal laws governing the area of practice.

Employment Opportunities

Those seeking employment as consumer advocates may find work within a variety of environments, such as law firms, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Additionally, private organizations such "Consumer Reports" magazine and political lobbyists employ advocates.

Desired Education

While a college degree is not required to become a consumer advocate, education within the areas of law and research can be quite useful.

In 2014, Glassdoor.com reported that consumer advocates in the United States earn a median salary of $45,000 per year.
