USPS Distribution Clerk Job Description
A USPS distribution clerk is an employee of the United States Postal Service responsible for sorting incoming and outgoing mail.
Distribution clerks are also referred to as mail sorters, mail processors, mail handlers, processing operators or processing clerks.
Responsibilities of the distribution clerk include loading/unloading trucks, transporting mail within the mail center and operating mail-sorting machinery.
Many postal workers, including those commonly referred to as distribution clerks, must take Exam 473, which tests memory, number skills, address recognition skills and other skills critical to the job.
Postal workers, must be able to stand for long periods of time, lift heavy bags of mail, and be able to operate machinery, such as a forklift.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average 2008 wage for mail sorters, processors, and machine operators was $50,020.
