Organized utility trailers are a great help to tradespeople with a lot of tools. One way to ensure they're organized is to install easily accessed shelves. The shelves can be built by hand or bought ready-made. Since most tradespeople have the necessary tools and skills, building the shelves from scratch makes the most sense. But those with more money than time might prefer to buy the shelves.
The price of ready-made commercial shelves can vary widely, depending on the quality. For metal shelves, it's best not to skimp. Look for quality steel that can take some weight, with sturdy but adjustable construction. Make sure the shelves can be secured within your utility trailer, and that they're intended for heavy-duty commercial use.
Accessibility is a big issue when dealing with trailers. You need everything to be packed tightly so it will fit into a small space. The problem is, tightly packed shelves are not easily accessible. One solution is to use a series of shelves on lockable wheels that can roll right out of the trailer. This gives you the option of separating the shelves once they're on the ground. You need a trailer with a ramp that is strong and doesn't rest at too steep an angle.
Rolling shelves are best suited to house tools that aren't too heavy. They can be built from ¾ inch plywood and mounted on heavy-duty, locking casters. Just don't forget to lock the casters and immobilize the shelves before driving away. Building shelves that fit tightly into the trailer will help prevent them from tipping when the trailer goes around corners.
Trailer With Side Openings
Anothe way to make shelves more accessible is to install them so they can be reached from outside of the trailer. Build the shelves permanently into the trailer, against the side walls. Then cut the walls, hinging them at the top so they can be opened and converted into awnings when you are on site. Attach sturdy clips to keep the walls closed when you are driving. If you make the wall shelves fairly narrow, you can still access the center of the trailer so it can be used to store larger tools and equipment.
