If you did not finish high school for any reason, it is not too late. You can earn your General Educational Development (GED) diploma. To earn this diploma, you must pass five tests: social studies, science, reading, math and writing. There are three steps to earning the GED: obtain practice test and study materials, study and then take the test.

Study Material

You can either purchase your own study materials or enroll in a study course. This will ensure you get your GED faster, because you are prepared for the test. There are numerous online courses offered and resources to purchase study material. Study materials can be found online or at your state Department of Education and Centers for Workforce Education. Staff is also available to answer any questions you may have.

Practice Test

Take the practice test after you have completed your study materials and/or online course. The practice test will help you assess your strengths and weaknesses, and prepare you for the actual exam. Practice tests may be taken online and you will be given an assessment of your score. There are also practice tests included in your study materials. If you visit a Workforce Center for practice tests, staff will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Take the Test

Sign up to take the test. The GED exam is not offered online, so you must find a local testing center in your area. Contact your state Department of Education or Center for Workforce Education to locate testing centers.
