How to Get Recertified As a Medical Assistant

As of 2011 medical assistants are required to go through a recertification process every 60 months to keep their Certified Medical Assistant credential. Recertification can be done either through exam or through meeting continuing education requirements. If recertification is not completed within the 60 month time frame, applicants lose the right to recertify by continuing education and must pay a 50 dollar fee and sit for the certification exam.

Recertification by Testing

Complete the examination application found on page 11 in the "Candidate Application and Handbook."

Make a photocopy of your most current Certified Medical Assistant credential.

Choose the date of your examination. There is a 90 day window surrounding the expiration of your current certification that this can be done in.

Send in your application, photocopy of your current credential, proof of CPR, and fee to the address listed on your application. As of 2011 the fee for recertification was 125 dollars for American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) members and 250 dollars for non members.

Schedule your examination as soon as you receive your scheduling permit in the mail.

Recertification through Continuing Education

Complete the CMA (AAMA) Recertification by Continuing Education Application.

Provide documentation showing that you have completed at the requirements for at least 60 recertification points. Certification points are accrued through participation in AAMA self study courses and activities or through approved college courses, contact hours, or physician CME hours.

Send in your application, proof of CPR, continuing education documentation and fee to the address listed on your application. As of 2011 the fee for recertification by continuing education was 65 dollars for American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) members and 130 dollars for non members.

Tip

CPR certification must be at levels equal to those provided by the Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
